Summer Solstice Sunset
Now a firmly-established favourite event in our annual programme, we are once again delighted to invite everyone to our free Summer Solstice evening.
The Summer Solstice falls on Saturday 21st June this year, the day when the sun is overhead the Tropic of Cancer, reaching its most northerly latitude. Join us for an informal social gathering on the Lewes downland to celebrate the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. Weather permitting, you'll be able to enjoy the breathtaking view across the Ouse Valley looking west while the sun goes down.

We will meet at the Phoenix Causeway Car Park in central Lewes, BN7 2JW, near the The Dorset Inn. Parking is free after 5pm. Setting off at 8pm, we'll take a leisurely stroll northward along the riverside passed the Tesco store, through Malling Fields recreation park, then eastward along Church Lane and crossing over the A26, before ascending Mill Road into the scenic Malling Down Nature Reserve.
Upon reaching the reserve, we'll hike up to the cairn atop Malling Hill, situated 143 metres (469 feet) above sea level. While most of the walk is relaxed, the final ascent is moderately steep and uneven, but well worth it. Please wear suitable clothing, especially footwear. Alcoholic drinks to celebrate this occasion are optional!
To fully enjoy the view, we aim to arrive at the cairn 30 minutes before sunset. After sundown, we'll head back down to The Dorset Inn, returning at about 10:15pm in time for last orders for those who are thirsty. The round-trip is less than 3 miles. Bring a torch for the walk back in the twilight.

This free event on public land and footpaths is open to all, so bring along your friends and family. Children and dogs are welcome but must be kept under control, especially near roads and around livestock!
